Hydraulic cylinders are widely used in many types of industrial equipment, such as manufacturing machines, automation systems, construction machinery, and hydraulic presses. Their main function is to convert hydraulic power into mechanical motion. Because of their important role, hydraulic cylinder reliability and maintenance are critical for stable equipment operation.

Because hydraulic cylinders often work under high pressure and continuous movement, their sealing system must be reliable. If hydraulic cylinder seals are not chosen correctly or the sealing structure is not designed properly, problems such as hydraulic cylinder oil leakage, pressure loss, seal damage, and reduced efficiency may occur.

For equipment manufacturers and maintenance teams, preventing hydraulic cylinder failures is very important. Proper hydraulic cylinder maintenance and seal selection help machines run smoothly, reduce downtime, and extend the service life of hydraulic equipment.

In many cases, hydraulic cylinder seal failure is related to incorrect seal hardness, high operating speed, poor temperature resistance, or unsuitable seal design. By improving hydraulic cylinder seal selection and sealing system design, these risks can be greatly reduced.

Below are several practical tips that can help prevent hydraulic cylinder failures and improve sealing performance.

Choose the Right Hydraulic Cylinder"> Seal Hardness

Seal hardness has a big impact on hydraulic cylinder sealing performance.

In most industrial applications, the recommended hardness for hydraulic cylinder seals is 92–97 Shore A. When the working pressure of the hydraulic cylinder is higher, the seal hardness should also be higher.

Harder seals can better resist deformation under pressure. This helps maintain a stable hydraulic cylinder sealing system and reduces the risk of leakage or seal damage.

Choosing the correct hydraulic cylinder seal hardness is one of the simplest ways to improve hydraulic cylinder reliability.

Control the Hydraulic Cylinder Seal Lip Speed

The linear speed of the hydraulic cylinder seal lip is another important factor affecting sealing performance.

For most hydraulic systems, the recommended seal lip speed should not exceed 0.5 m/s. If the speed is too high, friction between the seal and the contact surface will increase.

This may lead to:

  • More heat in the hydraulic cylinder sealing area
  • Faster hydraulic seal wear
  • Lower sealing performance
  • Higher risk of hydraulic cylinder oil leakage

Keeping the operating speed within the proper range helps extend the life of hydraulic cylinder seals and ensures smooth cylinder movement.

Ensure Hydraulic Cylinder Seals Can Handle Temperature Changes

Hydraulic cylinder seals should work well in both high and low temperature environments.

In general, hydraulic cylinder sealing materials should operate within a range of -30°C to 110°C.

This is important because the contact area between the seal and the cylinder surface can become hotter than the hydraulic oil itself. If the seal material cannot handle high temperatures, hydraulic seal failure may occur.

At the same time, in cold environments where temperatures may reach -30°C, the seal must remain flexible to prevent cracking or leakage.

Choosing seals with good temperature resistance for hydraulic cylinders helps ensure stable performance in different environments.

Use the Correct Seal for Each Hydraulic Cylinder Component

It is important to use the correct seal for each component of the hydraulic cylinder sealing system.

For example:

  • Shaft seals should only be used for shaft sealing
  • Piston seals should only be used for piston sealing

Some seals are designed for both shaft and piston use. However, these dual-purpose hydraulic seals are not ideal for high-pressure hydraulic cylinders.

This is because their base structure is usually narrower than that of dedicated seals. Under high pressure, they are more likely to deform or become damaged.

Dedicated seals provide better support and improve hydraulic cylinder sealing performance.

Use Hydraulic Cylinder Backup Rings in High-Pressure Systems

For hydraulic cylinders working at pressures above 25 MPa, it is recommended to install hydraulic cylinder backup rings.

Backup rings support the seal and prevent it from being pushed into small gaps under high pressure.

Without backup rings, the seal may deform too much and become damaged.

Using backup rings in hydraulic cylinders can:

  • Reduce seal deformation
  • Prevent seal extrusion
  • li>Reduce friction
  • Improve sealing stability
  • Extend hydraulic cylinder seal service life

This makes the hydraulic cylinder more reliable in high-pressure applications.

Match Backup Ring Hardness with Hydraulic System Pressure

Backup rings also need the correct hardness.

In general, higher hydraulic cylinder pressure requires harder backup rings.

Backup rings also experience pressure during operation. If their hardness is not suitable, they may deform and fail to support the seal properly.

Choosing the right hydraulic cylinder backup ring hardness helps protect the seal and improve the durability of the hydraulic cylinder sealing system.

Preventing hydraulic cylinder failures mainly depends on choosing the right seals and designing a reliable sealing system.

By selecting correct hydraulic cylinder seal hardness, controlling operating speed ensuring good temperature resistance using backup rings in high-pressure hydraulic cylinders equipment can operate more reliably.

For industrial equipment manufacturers and maintenance teams, improving the hydraulic cylinder sealing system is an effective way to reduce equipment downtime and extend the service life of hydraulic cylinders.
